{"id":79,"date":"2009-01-31T21:27:25","date_gmt":"2009-01-31T21:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hr-softwareblog.com\/?p=79"},"modified":"2012-06-05T21:02:48","modified_gmt":"2012-06-05T21:02:48","slug":"study-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/blog\/study-spending\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Spending on HR Technology to hold Steady"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe bottom isn\u2019t falling out of the HR technology market, according to a recent survey from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.workforce.com\/archive\/article\/25\/56\/91.php\">International Association for Human Resources Information Management<\/a>\u00a0professional group.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Look, I as much as anyone would love to believe these findings, but let\u2019s be realistic. If companies are letting employees go and are not meeting earning estimates by large margins, can those in the\u00a0<a title=\"hr software\" href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/\">HR software<\/a>\u00a0industry be optimistic enough to assume these companies won\u2019t spend any less money on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/hr-software-forum\/\">HR technology<\/a>? Sorry, but I don\u2019t buy the results of the survey; no matter how much I want to.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to surveys it\u2019s all about what questions are asked and how the replies are presented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c42% of the nearly 210 respondents (nearly 210 respondents; does that mean 209?) reported that their human resource information budgets will remain the same in 2009\u00a0<strong>and in 2008,<\/strong>\u00a0the association said in a release Friday. Another 21 percent of participants said budgets will increase by an average of 23 percent, while 37 percent said their budgets will decrease by a median of 15 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, I guess based on this information all of us in the\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/\">HR software<\/a>\u00a0technology industry should breathe a huge sigh of relief.\u00a0\u00a0Not so fast my fellow HR industry pros. Let\u2019s take a closer look at the question and the numbers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have a few questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Can we assume the responses of \u201cnearly 210 respondents\u201d provide an accurate outlook for what is going to happen with an entire industry? Would you invest your life savings on that assumption? How many people were the surveys sent out to? How many of those with drastically decreasing work forces and budgets were taking time to fill out the survey?<\/p>\n<p>2. Would it be logical to assume for those 79% of companies who plan to spend the same thing, or less, on human resource information budgets, that they are going to simply continue to pay annual support on their existing products instead of actually budgeting for new purchases?<\/p>\n<p>3. From the numbers, it looks to me like only 21% of the respondents are going to have increasing budgets for spending on new products and services. 21% does not sound like the industry will hold steady, not even close.\u00a0\u00a0But then I don\u2019t know what the numbers look like for last year or the year before that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what\u2019s my opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Based on the thousands of visitors we see on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/\">CompareHRIS.com<\/a>\u00a0and the hundreds that take time to fill out our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/hris-hrms-survey\/\">HRIS selection tool<\/a>, HR professionals are still looking for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/HR-Management-Software\/\">HR Management Software<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0We have seen, however, their expected time lines to make decisions are further in the future. I would expect that the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/HR-Information-Systems-Video\/\">HR Information Systems<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/HR-Management-System-webinars-SIGN-UP\/\">HR Management System<\/a>\u00a0industries may not see as much of a drop off as performance management or recruiting software services and applications. For many companies, HRIS and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/guide\">Payroll software<\/a>\u00a0is more likely to be seen as a necessity than other systems which may be viewed as luxuries; hence, un-needed expenses in a slowing economy.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/\">CompareHRIS.com<\/a>\u00a0planned to add product groups for performance management and recruiting software solutions to the site this quarter, but based on the above assumptions, we have decided to hold off for two months to see what the economy looks like before making this added investment in the site.<\/p>\n<p>I think the stock prices of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/UltiPro-HRIS-Payroll\/\">Ultimate Software<\/a>, Paychex, and\u00a0<a title=\"ADP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/ADP-Workforce-Now\/\">ADP<\/a>\u00a0will provide the truest sense of how the HR software industry will fare through this recession.
