{"id":59,"date":"2009-01-28T00:25:47","date_gmt":"2009-01-28T00:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hr-softwareblog.com\/?p=59"},"modified":"2012-06-05T21:02:45","modified_gmt":"2012-06-05T21:02:45","slug":"modern-workforce-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/blog\/modern-workforce-really\/","title":{"rendered":"The Modern Workforce: is it really that modern?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The\u00a0 Modern Workforce<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<strong>Is it really so modern?&#8230;<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\nWhen most people think of \u201cthe modern workforce\u201d images of iPod toting young professionals with PDA\u2019s and smart phones come to mind, people who are tech savvy and perhaps most noticeably; young.<\/p>\n<p>The reality presently being experienced by most Human Resource professionals is all too often the opposite, as millions of retirement aged workers; reeling from financial woes and a downtrodden economy, are opting to stay in the workforce longer. A recent survey by AARP reported that as many as 68% of workers between the ages of 55 and 70 have pushed back retirement, or cancelled it indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago the fear was that the\u00a0 baby boomers would retire en masse and cause a massive hole in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/modern-workforce-\/\">workforce\u00a0<\/a>of America on whole, leaving businesses in dire need of replacements to fill this perceived void. Today it is becoming ever clearer that this isn\u2019t happening, and while a mixed blessing that business don\u2019t have a gulf to fill, this new reality of un-retirees does create a multitude of dilemmas for business.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately the task of solving the various dilemmas presented by an aging\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/modern-workforce-\/\">work force<\/a>\u00a0will fall upon those in the Human Resources field, what that means for most companies is it will fall upon their HR departments. There are a number of core areas where HR and Management will need to work together to make wise decisions, as well as balance those decisions with care for their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/modern-workforce-\/\">workforce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a company\u2019s work force ages, the costs of benefits for that work force tends to increase, sometimes astronomically so in the case individual employees who happen to be the victims of\u00a0 catastrophic medical problems.\u00a0 Aging employees often times don\u2019t adapt well to long hours or arduous schedules, and want a shorter work day or less travel.\u00a0 Having an aging workforce can be increased workers compensation payouts in the case of labor jobs where aging employees are more apt to get hurt.\u00a0 This paragraph doesn\u2019t make sense, and in fact is not accurate as older workers tend to be more careful and have fewer incidents.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand what point(s) you are trying to make here.<\/p>\n<p>These and other issues will require thoughtful analysis and will be crucial, and the cornerstone of wise decision making is information.\u00a0 A number of companies have invested in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/\">HRM<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparehris.com\/HRM-Software-determining-your-needs\/\">HRM Software<\/a>\u00a0to streamline the information gathering process. In today\u2019s HR field companies who fail to track employee performance and vital information can find themselves at a disadvantage in analyzing their workforce as compared to those who are well informed.\u00a0 This all poses an even more fundamental set of questions about the information itself, and how it is being gathered.<\/p>\n<p>The information being gathered can lend itself in numerous beneficial ways, but what information is being gathered? What systems are in place to quantify the data that does exist?\u00a0 Does enough data exist? Are employees informed about their benefits?
